Brigadier General Richard Furman Jackson III, SCSG (ret.) of Columbia, SC passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of December 13, 2023. Originally from Sumter, SC, Richard was a graduate of Edmunds High School and a proud member of the class of 1965 at The Citadel. He earned his Master’s degree in business from The University of South Carolina and worked in pharmaceutical sales for over thirty years. Among the many activities and interests he enjoyed during his life, Richard served as a constable for the state of SC and was a dedicated member of the SC State Guard where he earned numerous awards and decorations and retired with the rank of Brigadier General.
Richard was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and leaves behind a legacy of faithfulness and love. He will be greatly missed by his family, including his daughters Jennifer (Michael) Deason and Karen (Bryan) Cress, 5 grandchildren: Josiah and Emma Deason and Sarah, Bryson, and Brayden Cress, his sister Dianne (Richard) Todd, and many extended family members and friends. Richard is predeceased by his parents, Richard Furman Jackson, Jr. and Mary Smith Jackson, as well as his beloved wife of 52 years, Brenda Rountree Jackson.

Visitation for Richard Furman Jackson, III will be held at Dunbar Funeral Home in Irmo on Monday, December 18 from 6-8 p.m., and his funeral service will be held at Union United Methodist Church in Irmo on Tuesday, December 19 at 2 p.m. with interment following at Bush River Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
