Sutton Jr., Harry L. Retired Army Col. Harry L. Sutton Jr. of El Paso, Texas, formerly of East Stroudsburg, passed away on Wednesday, May 3, at Fort Bliss, Texas. He was the husband of Bonnie Sutton. Harry was born Nov. 28, 1928, in East Stroudsburg and was the son of the late Harry Sutton Sr. and Alice Hornbaker Sutton. Harry graduated from East Stroudsburg High School in 1946. He was a member of the first football team, which formed in the 1945-1946 school year. He continued on with his education, attending and graduating from the Citadel Military College in Charleston, S.C. In 1950 after the Citadel, Harry began life in the U.S. Army Artillery Division. From South Carolina, Harry went to Fort Bliss. In the 1960s, he served with a Howitzer Division in Korea. During the 1970s, he was with the National Defense College in Ontario, Canada. He was the commanding officer at Fort McArthur in California until the closing of the base. Harry also served on the Joint Chiefs of Staff for two years, where he was in charge of all the military artillery operations in Vietnam. This was followed by an appointment to the Pentagon. Throughout his 27-year career, Harry was fortunate to see most of the world and received numerous commendations and accolades. Harry loved his career, but retired in 1977 to enjoy the civilian life. He enjoyed owning several small businesses, golfing and years of recreational vehicle traveling with his wife, Bonnie. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie, a daughter, Margaret Wild of Texas; two step-daughters, Nicolle Johnson of Texas and Michelle Ritt-Martinez of Arizona; a son, George Sutton of Colorado; a sister, Ora Cilurso and her husband, Francis, of Stroud Township; two nieces, Teresa Edinger of Delaware Water Gap and Angela Rorabaugh of Port Matilda; a nephew, Paul Hoffman of Colorado; a great-niece, Samantha Berry of Delaware Water Gap; and great-great-niece, Alice Berry of Delaware Water Gap. A full military funeral with honors will be held at 9 a.m. Monday, May 8, at Fort Bliss National Cemetery, Fort Bliss, Texas. A viewing will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 7, at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast, 4631 Hondo Pass, El Paso, Texas. Interment in Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
