Stonewall Jackson Ulmer Jr. COLUMBIA – Service for LTC Stonewall J. Ulmer, Jr., U.S. Army (Ret.), 89, will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Rev. Eugene Feagin will officiate. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be members of the Bauknight Sunday School Class. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, S.C. Chapter, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, SC 29202 or to Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church Organ Fund. Visitation will be Tuesday 5-7 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Mr. Ulmer died Sunday, March 12, 2006. Born in Colleton County, he was the only child of the late Stonewall Jackson and Ottie Lou Carter Ulmer. He attended Walterboro schools and graduated from the Citadel on June 3, 1939. He served in the U.S. Army on active duty during World War II, first as an infantry officer, and later as a transportation corps officer in the newly formed Transportation Corps. During the war, he served in both Europe and Africa and earned the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with bronze service star. After the war, he left active duty and remained in the U.S. Army Reserves and retired in 1967. He was a life member of the Citadel Alumni Association and a life member of the Richland Masonic Lodge #39. A Shriner and member of Omar Temple in Charleston, he reached the fifty year mark in Scottish Rite Masonry and received a 33 degree certificate. After the war, Mr. Ulmer became the assistant hospital administrator of High Point Memorial Hospital, High Point, N.C., where he met his beautiful wife, Ruby Jean Dellinger, who worked in the medical records department. Following this assignment, he became a career employee at the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. He worked in Health Planning and the Hill-Burton Hospital Construction Program. He was responsible for the administration of the Hospital and Medical Facilities Construction-Hill Burton; mental retardation facilities construction; community mental health centers construction and the Hospital Licensure Programs for the state of South Carolina. He was a charter member and served as chairman of the Membership Committee of the American Association for Hospital Planning. Mr. Ulmer served in offices and on boards and committees of various clubs and organizations. He was a member of Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church and the Bauknight Sunday School Class and former member of the Board of Trustees. Surviving are his devoted wife of nearly forty-seven years, Ruby Dellinger Ulmer; his beloved children, Joan Branning, Edye Moran (John Moran), and John Ulmer (Cathy Ulmer); along with his four sweet grandchildren, Katherine and Alex Branning and Thomas and Schuyler Moran.
