Retired Army Lt. Col. John Francis Sprague Sr., 61, of Odenton, died on March 22 at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda of complications from cancer. Col. Sprague was born on Jan. 8, 1944, in Dansville, N.Y., and graduated from The Citadel in Charleston, S.C., in 1965. While in the Army for 28 years, he served as a general aviation officer and an infantry officer. His hobbies included stamp collecting, yard work, and gardening. An avid sports fan, he especially enjoyed NASCAR racing. Survivors include his wife; Dian G. Sprague, whom he married in 1967; his mother, Mary F. Sprague of Dansville; two sons, John F. Sprague Jr. of Fortson, Ga., and Brett R. Sprague of Ellicott City; three brothers, Charles D. Sprague of Oakton, Va., Stephen J. Sprague of Knoxville, Tenn., and Michael J. Sprague of Dansville; and one grandchild. He was predeceased by his father, Francis O. Sprague, Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at Donaldson Funeral Home, 1411 Annapolis Road, Odenton, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will take place at 9 a.m. May 11 at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 8219 Town Center Drive.
