NORWICH – William S. Barnes, 80, passed away Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, in Dunedin, Fla. Bill was born in Garden City, Long Island. Shortly after his birth, his parents, Judge Frank W. Barnes and his wife Leola S. Barnes, moved to Norwich. Bill, a varsity basketball player, graduated from Norwich High School in June 1941. After graduation, he entered the Citadel in Charleston, S.C. to pursue an education in medicine. In his sophomore year, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Phillipines attached to the 80th general hospital unit as a corpsman until early 1946. Honorably discharged, he returned to the Citadel to continue his pre-med education. Upon his return to Norwich, he served two terms as Chenango County clerk. He then formed the Norwich Abstract and Title Corporation and ran that company for more than a decade. In 1971, Bill left Norwich and settled in the Clearwater/Dunedin, Fla. area. While there, he started the Pinellas County Law Review. In Norwich, he was a member of the Young Republicans, the Elks Club, Jaycees, and the Lost Pond Club. He was also active in various charitable causes. Golfing, card playing, and traveling back to Norwich were his passions. Bill is survived by his good friend and companion of more than 25 years, Mary Schuh; two daughters, Connie and her husband Jerry Farnham of Pennsylvania, and Patricia Barnes of New Hampshire; a son, Theodore Barnes, also of New Hampshire; two grandsons, Geoffery Farnham and Eli Barnes; and several cousins. Private graveside funeral services for Bill will be held at a later date in Mt. Hope Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. The arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Funeral Home.
