MacMillan, Joseph* JOSEPH EDWARD MacMILLAN Joseph Edward MacMillan of Marietta died October 4, 2007. Friends and family are invited to a reception at the familys Marietta home on Sunday, October 7, 2007 from 3:00-6:00 PM. An outdoor memorial service and celebration of life will begin at 4:30 PM. Dr. MacMillan was born March 3rd, 1930 in Newport News, Virginia. His loving parents were Lt. Col. Roscoe Irwin MacMillan (US Army) of Kansas City, Kansas and Annabel Atkinson MacMillan of Beech Island, SC. As a child he was a proud Eagle Scout. He graduated from The Citadel in 1951 and received his PhD in Chemistry from Cornell University in 1970. He met his future wife in 1957 as a member of the Christian Science Monitor Youth Forum in Atlanta and was married to Jilda Jordan MacMillan for 49 years. He honorably served his country for 17 years, decorated during the Korean War (Lieutenant, US Army), and in the US Army Reserves, rising to the rank of Lt. Colonel. He was Founder and President for 35 years of MacMillan Research, a chemical and microbiological research and testing laboratory, on Walton Street in Atlanta and later Barclay Circle in Marietta. He was also the Founding President and Ex-Officio President of the Association of Coffee Mill Enthusiasts, an educational club for collectors of antique coffee grinders. He authored the seminal work MacMillan Index of Antique Coffee Mills. He was a true Renaissance man chemist, entrepreneur, colllector, author, architect and builder, talented singer and painter, golfer, competitive tennis player invited to compete at Wimbledon, and devoted family man. Survivors include his wife, Jill; a son, Joseph Edward Tex MacMillan, Jr. of Sacramento, CA; two daughters, Kathleen MacMillan Egan of Kennesaw, GA and Elsa MacMillan Nownes of Knoxville, TN; and 5 grandchildren, Alex, Maxwell, Marcus, Peter and Paige. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to WellStar Community Hospice, 4040 Hospital West Drive, Austell, GA 30106 or a scholarship program, college, university, or charity of your choice.
