Lawson Hayes, Sr. SPARTANBURG – Lawson Hayes, Sr., 78, of 1129 Woodburn Road, died Tuesday, October 29, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. He was born February 19, 1924, in West Newton, MA, a son of the late Clifford Barron and Dorothy Lawson Hayes. He was educated at St. Pauls School, Concord, NH, graduated from Spartanburg High School, attended Davidson College, and graduated from The Citadel. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the Philippines and New Guinea. Mr. Hayes was a founding partner of Hayes Textiles, Inc., and served as National Vice President and Trustee of Ducks Unlimited, Inc. He played an instrumental role in starting and organizing the South Carolina Chapter of Ducks Unlimited. He was a lifetime member and supporter of the South Carolina Nature Conservancy. Mr. Hayes was a member of the Springdale Hall Club, Camden, SC; the Biltmore Forest Country Club, Asheville, NC; the Carolina Yacht Club, Charleston, SC; the Hendersonville, NC Country Club; the Piedmont Club of Spartanburg; the Spartanburg Country Club; and The Episcopal Church of the Advent of Spartanburg. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Eaddy Williams Hayes; a son and his wife, Lawson Hayes, Jr. and Jean Garrett Hayes of Spartanburg; a daughter and her husband, Eaddo Hayes Kiernan and Peter DeLacy Kiernan III of Greenwich, CT; a brother, Clifford Barron Hayes, Jr. of Spartanburg; and six grandchildren, Lawson Hayes III, Garrett Louise Hayes, Eaddy Adelle Hayes Kiernan, Mary Agnes Reilly Kiernan, Sarah DeLacy Kiernan and Peter De Lacy Kiernan IV. He was predeceased by a brother, John Edward Rollins Hayes. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, November 1, 2002, at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Dr. Clay H. Turner. The crucifier will be Charles Refshauge. Pallbearers will be Henry Blackford, Martin Cornelson, Caleb Fort, Stewart Johnson, Toney Lister, William J. Montgomery, Drew Refshauge, Chris Scott, Garrett Scott and George Todd. Honorary Escort will be Clarence E. Ballenger, Jr., Walter M. Cart, MacFarlane Cates, John F. Dulken, John Floyd Dunbar, William R. Eagan, Theodore Gage, Joseph W. Hudson, George McCoin, Ellis Murphy, Daniel A. Neely, Fred B. Oates and Dr. Glen L. Scott.
