James A. Palmer, 88, of St. Simons Island died Monday. A graveside funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Columbia, S.C. Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Dunbar Funeral Home in Columbia. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Surviving are four children, Jacqueline Palmer Merriwether of Naples, Fla., James A. Palmer Jr. of St. Simons Island, Walter Lynch Palmer of Cook Island, Fla., and Lodi E. Palmer of St. Simons Island; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Dr. Palmer attended the Citadel, graduated from the University of South Carolina and received his doctor of optometry from North Illinois College of Optometry in 1937. He resided and practiced optometry in Columbia for more than 50 years. He was a life member of the American Optometric Foundation and was recognized in 1988 for 50 years of leadership and dedication to the profession of optometry by the South Carolina Optometric Association. Dr. Palmer was awarded life memberships in the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, Sertoma International and Jaycees.
