COLUMBIA – The funeral for Mr. Anthony Tony Starks, formerly of Chester, will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 4, at Gethsemane Baptist Church. Dr. Charles Pratt will officiate and burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Starks, 48, died Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at his home. Born in Chester County on June 12, 1956, he was a son of David Starks and Classie M. Foster Starks. A member of Gethsemane Baptist Church, Mr. Starks attended Pine Grove A.M.E. Zion Church in Columbia. A 1974 graduate of Chester High School, Mr. Starks also graduated from The Citadel in Charleston in 1978. He was formerly employed with Springs Industries and Starks Shell Company and was the head of environmental services at the Monterrey County Hospital in Seaside, Calif. After returning to South Carolina, Mr. Starks became employed with Long’s Construction, Belk Warehouse and Target Stores of Columbia. While residing in Seaside, he was a member and past worshipful master of Peninsula Masonic Lodge No. 46, F&AM and PHRA of Monterrey. A Shriner, Mr. Starks was also a former ordained deacon of Oceanview Baptist Church in Seaside. Survivors include his parents, David Starks and Classie Mae Foster Starks of Chester; a brother, Bobbie D. Starks of Chester; two sisters, Valeria S. Thomas and her husband, Melvin, and Gwendolyn A. Brown and her husband, James, all of Chester; and his grandmother, Derotha L. Foster of Chester. He was predeceased by a brother, David L. Starks Jr., and his wife, Patricia. Viewing will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today, Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at King’s Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester. The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Saturday. King’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
