COLUMBIA – Funeral services for Col. Hugh King Boyd, Jr., 83, will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Forest Lake Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. James I. St. John. Burial with military rites will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to Forest Lake Presbyterian Church or the American Diabetes Association. Col. Boyd died Friday, May 28, 2004. Born in Newberry, S.C. to the late Hugh King Boyd, MD and Elizabeth Child Boyd, Col. Boyd graduated from the Citadel in 1942, and served in World War II. Assigned to the 38th Armored Infantry Battalion of the 7th Armored Division as a platoon leader in the fall of 1944, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge, defending the town of St. Vith. For his bravery during this pivotal battle, Col. Boyd received the Silver Star. On December 22, 1944 he was captured by the Germans and made a prisoner of war until his liberation by the Soviets in February 1945. He also served in combat during the Korean War with the 180th Infantry in the 45th Division. After the Korean War, Col. Boyd made the military his career until he retired after 31 years of loyal service. After his retirement, he earned a masters degree in Public Administration from the University of South Carolina, and served as Director of Emergency Preparedness for Richland County, South Carolina, until he retired in 1987. He was a member of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Deacon and an Elder, and faithfully taught the Trinity Sunday School class for more than twenty years. Col. Boyd was also a Gideon. Col. Boyd is survived by his wife, Dorothy Shealy Boyd; son, James F. Boyd, MD and his wife, Judy of Charlotte, N.C.; son, Hugh King Boyd, III and his wife, Loretta of Fayetteville, Ga.; son, William D. Boyd of Frisco, Texas; and daughter, LTC Alice Boyd Smith, MD and her husband, Patrick of Honolulu, Hawaii; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive him. He was a faithful Christian, a loving husband and father, and a hero to his family and country.
