Charles Henry Wood Jr., 83, died April 9, 2003, after a brief illness in Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville, N.C. Mr. Wood was born in Edenton on Aug. 19, 1919, the son of the late Charles Henry and Edith Bond Wood and remained a resident of Edenton his entire life. He graduated from Edenton High School and earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. Mr. Wood then entered flight training in the U.S. Navy and was awarded his wings, qualifying him as a carrier based pilot in the early years of World War II. He served two tours of duty in the Pacific and was decorated with the Navy Air Medal for his role in sinking a Japanese ship. Following the war, Mr. Wood pursued a career in the sale and distribution of agricultural chemicals until he retired in 1983. He was a licensed land surveyor, a real estate broker and a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Mr. Wood was also a member of the Unanimity Masonic Lodge No. 7 and a former member of the Edenton School Board. Mr. Wood is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nellie Riddick Wood; a daughter, Nellie W. Dilda and husband, Bennett of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; two sons, Charles H. Wood III and wife, Marilyn of Tallahassee, Fla., and Emmet Riddick Wood and wife, Lynne of Raleigh; six grandchildren, Charles IV, Ashley, Emmet Jr. and Taylor Wood and Robert and Randall Hounsell; three great-grandchildren, Kara and Kourtney Hounsell and Emmaline Wood; and a brother-in-law, Emmet L. Riddick and wife, Bettye of Atlanta. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Edenton Saturday at 11 a.m. At his request, Mr. Wood will be cremated and his ashes interred at Beaver Hill Cemetery following the service. Miller Funeral Home, Edenton, is in charge of arrangements. Friends may join the family at the residence. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Edenton-Chowan Rescue Squad or St. Paul’s Episcopal Church would be appreciated.
