Edgar A. Terrell, Jr., ’41

Edgar Allen Terrell, Jr. of Charlotte, NC, died November 28, 2013, at his home. A Charlotte native, he was born on July 19, 1920, and was the son of Edgar Allen and Jane Johnson Terrell. Mr. Terrell attended the Charlotte city schools and graduated from Central High School. He was a 1941 Honor Graduate of the Citadel, Charleston, South Carolina. On graduation he was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Army and entered active duty in October 1941 and was assigned to the Armored Force at Fort Knox, KY. After training duty at Fort Knox, he joined the 9th armored division which completed its field training with desert maneuvers at Camp Polk, Louisiana. He was promoted to captain and served as a Tank Company Commander in the 19th Tank Battalion of the 9th Armored Division. He participated in the Battle of the Ardennes in Luxembourg, Battle of the Rhineland and the Divisions Campaign in Central Germany until war’s end. Mr. Terrell was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for action in Luxembourg and retired from military service with the reserve rank of Major in April, 1953. After the war, Mr. Terrell joined the Terrell Machine Company, a textile machinery company founded by his father. After serving as personnel and plant managers, he became president in 1975. Mr. Terrell served on the Board of Directors of the NC Textile Foundation and the American Textile Machinery Manufacturers Association. He was also a member of the regional Board of Directors of Wachovia Bank of NC. For a period of ten years he was on the Board of Directors of the Citadel Development Foundation. A life-long Episcopalian, he served on the Vestry of Christ Episcopal Church. He was also past president of the Charlotte Rotary Club. Mr. Terrell also had memberships in the Charlotte Country Club and the Linville, NC, Golf Club. As a private pilot, Mr. Terrell had a lifetime interest in aviation. He also had a passion for golf, travel and photography. From 1963 to 1976, he was a trustee of Central Piedmont Community College and for ten years was Chairman of the Board. During that time, he was instrumental in establishing the CPCC Foundation as a supporting organization to the college. The Terrell building on the main campus is named in his honor. A thoughtful gentleman, his generous deeds touched many lives. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Hassler Schuber, whom he married in 2003. His first wife, Emmie Jennings Terrell predeceased him in 2002. Mr. Terrell is also survived by his sons, Dr. Robert E. Terrell (Maria) of Lansing, NY, Dr. William J. Terrell (Maria) of Richmond, VA, and Jon A. Terrell of Charlotte, and his grandchildren, Jane Paul (Thad) of Washington, DC, Edward Terrell (Emily) of Fredericksburg, VA, and Robert Terrell, San Diego, CA. Mr. Terrell is survived by four great-grandchildren, Henry and William Paul and George and Louisa Terrell. Memorials may be made to Central Piedmont Community College Foundation at P.O.
