Billy P. Mixon, ’49

Billy P. Mixon, of Atlanta, died peacefully on Independence Day, Thursday July 4, 2013, in the arms of his cherished wife and surrounded by his many loving family members. Billy Mixon was born in Augusta, Ga. on July 9, 1928, the son of Charles Eugene Mixon and Josephine Elizabeth Collins. In 1930 Billy’s family moved to Columbus, Ga. where Billy grew up. Billy was educated at Columbus High School, The Citadel in Charleston, SC, and the University of Ga. He enlisted in the US Army in 1950 and graduated from Officer Candidate School at Ft. Benning, Ga. Billy was proud of his military service, having served in Korea where he commanded a tank platoon positioned near the 38th parallel. He was awarded the Bronze Service Star and his platoon was awarded a combat unit citation. In June of 1952, Billy and Ida Few Bigbie were married at Wesley Chapel Methodist in Clay Co., Ga. Following the Korean War, Billy and Few located in Columbus Ga where they started their family and Billy joined The National Life Insurance Company of Vermont, the company that he served for 40 years. In Columbus, Billy was active in many community and cultural affairs to include as president of the Columbus Kiwanis Club, president of the Ann Elizabeth Shepherd Childrens Home, president of the Green Island Country Club, and a founding member of the Big Eddy Club. He continued his support of the military by serving as a liaison between the Columbus business community and Ft Benning. He served on the board of stewards at St. Paul Methodist Church and as Boy Scout leader of his own boyhood Troop 1 where both his sons earned Eagle status. In 1977, the Mixons moved to Atlanta where Billy was promoted to General Agent for the National Life of Vermont Agency encompassing Georgia, Florida, Alabama and South Carolina. Billy was proud to build the Mixon-Baker Agency into an industry leader – “putting the pieces together” as he expressed it – which led National Life of Vermont for many years and received numerous company awards. However Billy was most gratified with teaching, nurturing and mentoring young agents to become not only successful in business but successful in their family and personal lives as well. Billy was an active member of Peachtree Road United Methodist, where Few and he particularly enjoyed their participation in the Timothy Class. Mixon was also active in the Buckhead Rotary Club, Buckhead Coalition and the Capital City Club. He cherished watching his seven grand children grow and prosper. He relished a good cigar, fine scotch and a vigorous game of tennis with his tennis group. He loved tending to his amazing hybrid tea roses and thoroughly enjoyed showing them off and giving them away. Billy Mixon was a true Southern gentleman who gave much, loved much and was much loved, lived life to the fullest and often “”stopped to smell the roses!”” The Mixon family wishes to thank the members of the Timothy Class from Peachtree Rd. Methodist Church for their many years of camaraderie and fellowship. They also wish to thank the staff and their fellow residents at Lenbrook where they enjoyed their last few retirement years. Special thanks also to Billy’s incredible caretaker Conrad Kidayi – a sweeter more gentle fellow never walked the earth. Billy is survived by his wife of 61 years, the former Ida Few Bigbie, daughters Meg Evans (daughters Jenny Lynn Murray and Megan); Jenny Mixon Aiken; twin sons William P Mixon (wife Becky, daughter Brittany Collins, son Billy Mixon II); and Charles M Mixon (wife Lynn, son Charles Mixon, Jr., daughters Mary Walker and Maggie). Mixon is also survived by his younger sister Dr. Mary Jo Sibbald of Atlanta (son John Sibbald Jr. and daughter Jodie Tribble). Funeral services will be held at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church, 3180 Peachtree Road on Tuesday, July 9, at 1:30 following a family interment service at Arlington Cemetery. A reception will follow at Lenbrook Retirement Community at 3747 Peachtree Road. Tags: 1949
