Capt. George C. White III, USA, Ret., a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, passed away at the age of 71 on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, with his adoring wife, Pattie, at his side. Capt. White leaves behind the love of his life and wife of 30 years, Patricia “Pattie” of Newbury Park, Calif.; sister Kay Kasley and her husband, Larry, of Sparta, N.J.; his daughter, Wendy White-Baxter and her husband, Bill, of Madison, N.J.; son George “Skip” White of Denville, N.J.; stepdaughters, Jenni Ziegler and Elizabeth Sager and Elizabeth’s husband Jerry of Lahaina, Hawaii, and five loving grandchildren, Kailey, Dale, Amanda, Kieran and Alec. George grew up in Towaco, N.J. He graduated from the Citadel Military College in 1963 and served three tours of duty in Vietnam. He was commander of C (Charlie) Company, 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry, a unit that was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for coming to the aid of artillery and infantry companies that were being overrun by enemy forces during the Battle of Soui Tre/FSB Gold. He was a two-time recipient of the Bronze Star Medal for heroism in ground combat and was awarded three Air Medals. George served as liaison officer between our military and the Saigon Police on his second tour of duty and then served five years as deputy chief of security for the American Embassy in Saigon. He was among the final evacuees from the American Embassy rooftop at the war’s end. Later in life, George owned and operated Flying Fish Seafood in Lincoln Park, N.J., for several years before moving to California with Pattie. He re-established his fish market as Moby Dick Seafood in Ventura, Calif. George was an avid fisherman, animal lover and astronomer who loved his country and his family wholeheartedly. He will be greatly missed and we will cherish his memory. Family and friends will gather for a celebration of his wonderful life on Saturday, March 9, 2013, in Ventura, Calif.
