Lang Weathersbee Anderson Jr., of Charleston, died Feb. 4, 2012. He was born on January 7, 1919 in Beaufort, South Carolina, to Dr. Lang W. Anderson, MD, and Elvira Ryckman Anderson. He graduated from Pierre S. DuPont High School in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1937. During summers prior to graduating from high school he was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps and was involved with the creation of the Delaware State Forest in Sussex County. Also in 1937 he joined the Delaware Army National Guard and while a student at The Citadel, he was called to federal active duty in 1940 immediately prior to the United States entering World War II. Lang was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1941 and in June of that year he married Vivian Carroll Hubbard at West Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, DE. He initially saw service in Panama and later served in Europe as a Platoon Leader and Company Commander, participating in six major campaigns as a member of Patton’s 3rd Army (27th Armored Infantry Battalion, 9th Armored Division) receiving the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Bronze Star with V device. He subsequently served in military government in both Germany and in post-war Japan and then saw combat again during the Korean War (89th Medium Tank Battalion, 25th Infantry Division). He retired from the US Army in 1962 and earned a Masters Degree in clinical and educational psychology from the University of Omaha (now the Univ. of Nebraska at Omaha) in 1964. Lang worked as a psychologist in Iowa, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia, and as an associate professor of psychology at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore where he was awarded a Ph.D. He retired for a second time in 1990 and moved to Edisto Island, SC, and later to Charleston, SC. An enthusiastic financial supporter of The Citadel academic and athletic programs, Lang was a lifetime member of the Citadel Alumni Association (Class of ’41). Lang was an avid hunter and fisherman who enjoyed gourmet food and world travel. He regularly attended reunions of his WWII infantry unit the 27th Infantry Battalion until he was unable to travel. He was a direct descendent of Peter Stuyvesant, last Dutch Governor of New Amsterdam (New York City) 1647-1664, and was also a direct descendent of Revolutionary War soldier Thomas Weathersbee who served under Francis Marion. Preceded in death by his parents and sister Emily Mae Anderson White, he is survived by his former wife Vivian Hubbard Anderson and sons Lang W. Anderson III (Anne) Lincoln, Nebraska; Carroll Simms Anderson II (Marion) Garner, North Carolina; Ronald H. Anderson (Marilyn) Wilmington, NC; and Douglas H. Anderson (Alison) Pawleys Island, SC plus, 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
