James “Jim” Robert Crouch III, age 73, of Winnsboro, died at Palmetto Health Richland on May 18, 2010. Mr. Crouch was born in Greenville, SC on February 8, 1937, the son of the late James R. and Jean Henderson Crouch, Jr. He graduated from the Citadel with the class of 1959 where he attained a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical engineering and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army. Mr. Crouch served for three years on active duty with the 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, KS. Upon discharge he joined the National Guard’s elite US Army Special Forces. He rose to the rank of Major prior to his retirement in 1993. His civilian occupations were centered around the design, construction, maintenance and management in the electrical utility industry in the Carolinas and Georgia. Mr. Crouch was a member of Saint John’s Episcopal Church where he served in many capacities including two terms as Senior Warden. He served as President of South Carolina Electric Cooperative Engineers Association, Fairfield County Chamber of Commerce, and the Winnsboro Rotary Club. He also served on the Board of Mid-County Water Company. He also founded and was first President of Chapter VI of the Airborne Association. Mr. Crouch was the first civilian ever elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the US Army Airborne Association and was a Decade Member of the Special Forces Association. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Carlton Crouch of Winnsboro, three daughters: Catherine Ann Crouch of Indianapolis, IN, Julie Bell of Hilton Head, SC and Candace Szkaradek of Lexington SC; one son: James R. IV of Roswell, GA, and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 24, 2010 at St. John’s Episcopal Church conducted by The Reverend Jim Neuburger. The Vestry will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are surviving members of the Citadel Class of 1959 and member of Mr. Crouch’s Special Forces Unit. Burial will follow at the Peterkin Family Cemetery across from the St. Matthews Episcopal Church near Fort Motte, SC at 3:30 p.m. The family will receive friends at Pope Funeral Home on Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. Pope Funeral Home is serving the Crouch family.
