Arnold W. Barden, of San Diego, died May 11, 2010. He was born on July 3, 1922 in Markham, VA. He attended The Citadel, graduated in 1942 and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. Arne served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam as an aviator, flying everything from jets to helicopters. In Vietnam, he was the Squadron Commander of VMO-2 (Barden’s Bandits), which supported ground troops and conducted helicopter Medivac. In 1962, while stationed in Camp Pendleton, Arne met and married Elaine Frausini. After residing in El Toro, they moved to Washington, D.C. While stationed in D.C., Arne worked as a Program Manager (R&D) of the CH-53 helicopter for the U.S. Marine Corps. He then went on to Norfolk, VA, to the Armed Forces Staff College. After 28 years of service, Arne retired from the USMC as a Colonel. He then worked for General Dynamics as a Systems Engineer. He retired from GenDyn 15 years later. Arne is survived by his wife, Elaine, his daughter, Lisa, her husband, Paul Lavoie, and a nine-year-old granddaughter, Bella. Arne’s son, Arnold Barden Jr., who followed him into the military, lost his life while serving in Vietnam in 1971. Arnold will be remembered for his generous spirit and loving heart. A funeral with military honors will be held at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. The date has not been set.
