Dr. John Harvey Nicholson II, 88, of Statesville, N.C., died Monday, March 22, 2010, at the Gordon Hospice House. He was born August 25, 1921, in Iredell County, the son the late Doctors Clyde Richard and Mariana Nicholson. He was a physician for 55 years, retiring from active practice in 2001. He is survived by his wife, Frances Scott Nicholson, whom he married on January 29, 1990. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gertrude May Nicholson. He is survived by their six children and their families: John H. and Corinne Nicholson, III, of Wadesboro, and their children, John H. Nicholson, IV, and Tori Dowell of Greensboro, and Colin and Effie Nicholson Glover of Washington, DC; Bill and Mari Nicholson Earnhardt of Raleigh, and their children, Stewart and Anna Earnhardt McQueen of Charlotte, and Nancy Jane, William and Heyward of Raleigh; Tip Nicholson and Nancy Davis of Statesville, and their children, Brittain of Charlotte and Peggy of Charlottesville, VA; Richard and Brenda Nicholson of Rock Hill, SC, and their children, Cora of Rock Hill, and Griffin of Charlotte; Parker and Betty Jo Nicholson of Troutman and their children, Thomas and Katherine of Maiden, Ingram of Fayetteville, and Callie of Troutman; and Brent and Nancy Nicholson Bustle, and their children, Dewey, Alex, Henry and John, all of Troutman; and four great-grandchildren, Cassidy and Zachary Nicholson of Greensboro, Porter Williams of Rock Hill, and Mariana Rhett McQueen of Charlotte. Dr. Nicholson is also survived by four stepchildren and their families: Fred and Ann McElwee Herschler of Greensboro; Jack and Mary McElwee Clayton of Raleigh and their children, Zachary of Raleigh, John of Washington, DC, and Will of Raleigh; Gary and Estelle McElwee Stinchcomb of Fairburn, GA; and Nate and Shelley McElwee and their children, Addie, Nathan and Briggs, all of Statesville. Also preceding him in death were his brother, Henry Nicholson, and sister, Marianna Nicholson. A graduate of the Citadel in 1942, Dr. Nicholson attended medical school at the Medical College of Virginia and served in the U.S. Army as a Captain in the United States and the Philippines. He was a Fellow in the American College of Physicians, a board certified Internist, and on the faculty of the Bowman Gray School of Medicine. Dr. Nicholson was a long-time member of the Iredell County Board of Health, serving also as board chairman. He helped establish Iredell Memorial Hospital’s first Cardiac Rehab Program and was a volunteer physician at the Open Door Clinic. Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the home of Nate and Shelley McElwee, 404 West End Ave. A private graveside service will be held Wednesday, March 24, at Oakwood Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, where he was a long-time member. Rev. Steve Scott will officiate. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. Nicholson Funeral Home of Statesville is assisting the family.
