On November 15, 1778, Washington placed Col. Michael Kovats in command of the Pulaski Legion. Just months later, Congress ordered the Legion on a grueling march south to defend Charleston. That mission carried Kovats into the Southern campaign—where he gave his life at the Battle of Charleston in May 1779.

Daniel Library has on display a portrait of Kovats, along with a painting of the reenactment of his final battle in Charleston and other artifacts.
