Mr. Rivers, 73, died in his sleep on Tuesday afternoon, November 4, 2003. He had been in poor health for several years. He was born in Gadsden, AL, to the late Julian Max Rivers and Natalie Williams Rivers, and was a graduate of The Citadel and Candler School of Theology. He served as a U.S. Army chaplain in Germany, Thailand and Vietnam. He left the Army in 1970, having attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and worked for Mecklenburg County Health Department until his retirement in 1999. He was a member of the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church and affiliated with Sharon United Methodist Church in Charlotte. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Barbara Crow Rivers; two sons, Julian Rivers and his wife, Cynthia, and Paul Rivers and his wife, Susie, all of Charlotte; and grandsons Christopher, Jonathon and Nathan, also of Charlotte. In addition, he is survived by three step-children, Ross Howard of Charlotte, Judy Tompkins of Richmond, VA, Beth Howard of Asheville, an five step-grandchildren. A military burial will take place in Andersonville National Cemetery on Friday morning at 11:00, and a memorial service will be held at Sharon United Methodist Church on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 PM.
