William Vernon Sheppard, 69, of Charleston, S.C., died January 28, 2011. Born April 18, 1941, in Spencer, WV, he was the son of the late Vernon L. Sheppard and the late Margaret Montgomery Sheppard. He was first married to Gaye Hamilton Lott and then to the late Charlotte Ann McGehee. Mr. Sheppard graduated from The Citadel in 1963 with a BS in Civil Engineering and was commissioned into the U.S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant. He served as a Ranger in the 82nd Airborne Division, Engineering Corps out of Fort Bragg, NC. After his military service, he began his engineering career and worked with several firms including HNTB, Wilbur Smith & Associates, PBS&J, Sverdrup, HNTB, DMJM and LPA. Mr. Sheppard was instrumental in the development, design and construction of numerous projects around the world and throughout the US. He was a proud member of the Tau Beta Pi Society, National Society of Professional Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, Institute of Traffic Engineers, American Association of State Highway Engineers and Transportation Officials, Southeastern Association of State Highway Engineers and Transportation Officials where he served on the boards and in a variety of officer positions. He was an advisory board member of the Center for Urban Transportation at the University of South Florida, as well as a member of the Citadel Club of Charleston and past member of the Greater Columbia Area Citadel Club, Arizona Citadel Club, the Orange County/L.A. Citadel Club and the St. Louis Gateway Area Citadel Club. He attended Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church on Sullivan’s Island. Survivors include his son William Kevin Sheppard of Chapin, SC; daughter Candice Gaye Sheppard of Columbia, SC; grandson Zachary William Christian Sheppard; and granddaughter Alyssa Nicole Sheppard. The family will celebrate his life with a Memorial Gathering from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. Thursday, February 3, 2011, at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant, 1520 Rifle Range Road.
