The Reverend William Thomas Fitzgerald died Sunday, April 30, 2017 in Gainesville, GA after a brief illness. He was a resident of Lanier Lodge. Fr. Tom was born on April 10, 1927 in Augusta, Georgia, the son of William Thomas Fitzgerald and Martha Halley Wall. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, married in 1952, Martha Trezevant Simpson. He attended Richmond Academy. He served in the US Navy Reserve 1945-1960. He was a veteran graduate of The Citadel, BS Chemistry 1949. Employed as research chemist, Minute Maid Corp, Winter Park FL 1950-51. Chemistry instructor, The Citadel 1951- 52. Graduate training in chemistry at University of Georgia, MS 1953, a member of Phi Delta Theta. After relocating back to Winter Park, he and Martha attended All Saints Episcopal Church. There he discerned a calling to the priesthood and attended seminary at University of the South, Sewanee TN. He was priested in 1960 at Church of the Redeemer, Sarasota, FL, where he served as Curate/Rector 1960-78. He served as Rector, Christ Church Frederica from 1978 until retiring in 1992. He served as Trustee/Regent, University of the South, 1966-87. Survivors include sisters, Halley Townsend of Aiken, SC and Esther Murray of Augusta; daughter, Martha Grey (Robert Usher) Thomason III of Athens, GA; son, Thomas Patrick Fitzgerald, MD of Sarasota FL; daughter, Florence Fitzgerald of Atlanta; son, Michael King Fitzgerald, Sr. (Jennifer) of Athens; daughter, Mary (Holmes B., MD) Marchman of Gainesville, GA; son, Timothy Wall Fitzgerald (Sissy) of Atlanta; son, David Barrington Fitzgerald (Sandra) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; son, John Paul (Nancy) of Edisto Beach, SC. Grandchildren include Katherine Grey Wood(Christian) and Robert Usher Thomason IV, William Grey Fitzgerald, David Patrick Fitzgerald and Elizabeth Anne Fitzgerald, Michael King Fitzgerald, Jr. and Catherine DeMaris Fitzgerald, Anna Roswell Marchman, Sarah Anderson Marchman and Thomas Baker Marchman, Sadie Grey Fitzgerald and Martha “Maggie” Maguire Fitzgerald, Jordan Thomas Fitzgerald and Hailey Grace Fitzgerald. Great grandchildren include Margaret “Maggie-Jane “, Michael Usher and Martha Kienzle Wood. Remembrances may be made to Church of the Redeemer, Sarasota, FL, Christ Church Frederica, Saint Simons Island, GA, or St. Michael’s Conference, 2201 St. Mary’s St., Raleigh, NC 27608. A High Choral Requiem Service will be held at a future date at The Church of the Redeemer, Sarasota, Florida. Fr. Fredrick Robinson will officiate.
