William Stanford “Stan” James, MD, 89, of Shallotte, NC, passed away on Tuesday, August 8, 2023 after an illness. He was born in Florence, SC, a son of the late Franklin Earl and Alice Cain James. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by a son, John Franklin James; a daughter, Mary Anne James; a son-in-law, Benjamin W. Ingram, III, and two brothers, Robert Earl James and Philip Lamonte James.
Stan graduated from McClenaghan High School, Class of 1951. He then attended and graduated from the Citadel, Class of 1955. He attended the Medical University of SC and graduated with his MD in 1959. Following medical school, he was commissioned as a Captain in the US Army and continued his medical training at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC. He was board certified in radiology and began his practice in Orangeburg, SC, then in Augusta, GA, where he was also on the faculty of the Medical College of Georgia, and finally practicing in Union, SC until his retirement. Over the course of his medical career, he was a member of the South Carolina Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the American College of Radiology, and served as president of the Board of Trustees of the Union Hospital District in Union, SC. While residing in Union, Stan was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the Union Rotary Club and he was a member of his beloved ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out) Men’s Club. After his retirement, he and his wife, Mary, moved to Shallotte, NC.
Stan is remembered as a man devoted to his wife, children, and grandchildren, who knew him as “Grandy”. He cherished his many friendships and his beloved country home. He will be greatly missed.
Stan is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Mary Huggins James; daughter, Susan James Ingram; two sons, William Stanford James, Jr. (Anne Marie) and Joseph David James (Kelly); daughter-in-law, Michelle James; a brother, Joseph Neville James; nine grandchildren, Benjamin Ingram, IV, Stephen Ingram, Ginny James, Anna James, Jack James, Mary Kathryn James, Natalie James, Melisa James and Connor James.
A funeral service directed by Cain Calcutt Funeral Home will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 12, 2023 at Tabernacle Church, 6758 Francis Marion Rd., Pamplico, SC 29583. Burial will follow in Tabernacle Cemetery.
The family will also hold a Celebration of Life service at 1:00 PM on Saturday, August 19, 2023 at Grace UMC in Union, SC.
