William Spurgeon (Bill) Jones, Jr., 85, of Aiken, died Wednesday, July 27, 2011. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday in Graniteville Cemetery with Dr. Henry Chennault officiating. Mr. Jones was born in Orangeburg County, a son of the late William Spurgeon Jones, Sr. and Mary Rebecca Gue’ Jones. He was a 1950 graduate of The Citadel, served in the US Navy during WWII where he was involved in the invasion of Okinawa, and was a research chemist for E.I. DuPont at the Savannah River Plant. He was also a member of First Baptist Church, was very active in the Association for mentally retarded children, and was active in the Boy Scouts. He is survived by his beloved wife of over 60 years, Mary Virginia “Ginger” Blackman Jones; two daughters, Onei Gue’ Jones Keenan, Aiken, Bonnie Leigh Jones (Earle) Brodie, Aiken; one grandson, Tony Durham Keenan, Johnston, SC; dear friend, Marco Meihe. He was preceded in death by a son, William Spurgeon Jones, III. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to a charity of choice.
