William Preston Baldwin, of Laurens, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and community leader, passed away on Sunday, December 15, 2024, at the age of 77.
He was born in Washington, DC to the late William and Gloria Pavlis Baldwin. A proud graduate of The Citadel in 1969, William was a member of the prestigious Summerall Guard Drill Team. He served his country with honor as an Ordinance Officer in the Army during the Vietnam era, stationed in West Germany. His time in Germany left a lasting impression, and he returned several times, drawn by the culture and memories.
William’s professional life was marked by his dedication to the automotive industry. As the owner of Baldwin Pontiac, Buick GMC, he was known for his integrity and commitment to excellence. His motto, “Everything you do, you do it like you’re putting your name on it,” was a testament to his character and work ethic.
Deeply invested in his community, William was a long-standing member of the Lions Club, serving as President of the Shillington Lions Club. He was also actively involved with the hospital board and a dedicated member of the First Presbyterian Church since 1987. His love for Laurens and the southern way of life was evident in all he did.
In his leisure time, William enjoyed fishing, crabbing, and boating, often spending time on the water in the low country. Sunday afternoons were reserved for football, where he could be found in his recliner, cheering on his favorite teams.
William’s legacy is one of service, dedication, and love for his family and community. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
William is survived by the love of his life, Kathy Baldwin, whom he met at Bully Lyons in Reading, Pennsylvania where he looked forward to Shagging on the Sand every year with his awesome dance moves; his sons, Jason Baldwin of Laurens, Major Glenn Wolfe (Janine) stationed in Germany, and Stephen Wolfe of Colorado; grandson, Derek Wolfe; two great-grandsons; sisters, Barbara Sykes, and Brooke Wilson. William’s extended family includes brothers-in-law George Goodman (Milly) and Ron Goodman (Robin), sisters-in-law Ann Bowers, Jane Omlor (Bob), and Bea DeWald (Bill); and numerous nieces and nephews.
