The funeral for William McPherson Johnston Jr. will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Epiphany Lutheran Church in Conyers. Pastor John Beckman will officiate. Interment will follow at Green Meadow Memorial Gardens. Born in Columbus, Mr. Johnston, 76, died Oct. 5, 2002, at Riverside Nursing Home in Covington. He was the son of the late Kara Hopkins and William McPherson Johnston. He was a member of Epiphany Lutheran Church and formerly a member of Shades Valley Lutheran Church in Birmingham, Ala., St. James Lutheran Church in Brunswick and St. John Lutheran Church in Atlanta. He attended the Citadel in Charleston, S.C., until the draft interrupted his college career. After attending U.S. Army O.C.S., he was sent to Japan as part of the occupational forces. Following his release from the military, he returned to the Citadel and graduated with a civil engineering degree. He worked at Bartlett s Ferry, Plant McManus, Plant Hatch and Plant Vogle, building power facilities for Georgia Power Company and Alabama Power Company. He retired in 1997 from his engineering career and made music his hobby. He is a past member of the Covington-Conyers Choral Guild and served as choir director for his church. For recreation, he played piano with a jazz band and also played tennis. He won top honors in a Rockdale County tennis tournament a few years ago. Surviving are his wife, Beth Johnston; sons, William Christopher Johnston, Samuel McPherson Johnston and Dr. Michael R. Johnston; daughters-in-law, Cindy Johnston, Tonya Johnston and Beth E. Johnston; and grandchildren, Jennifer, Laura, Beth, Michael, Whitney Caroline, Rachel and Adam. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Epiphany Lutheran Church, 2375 Ga. 20 South, Conyers, GA 30094. The family will receive friends today from 4-7 p.m. at Harry L. White Funeral Home in Conyers.
