William Joel Smith, Jr., 81, formerly of 603 Chestnut St., died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004 at Anne Maria Nursing Center in North Augusta, SC. Born in Abbeville, SC, he was a son of the late William Joel, Sr. and Kathleen Wilkes Smith. He was a 1946 graduate of The Citadel and was also a member of The Citadel Alumni Association. He was a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of Greenville Presbyterian Church. He retired as a special Representative with The Colonial Life Insurance Co. Survivors are: sister Imogene Smith Stranch Nashville, TN., sister-in-law Charlotte Bannister Smith Abbeville, SC, nephews James Gerard Stranch Nashville, TN, Eugene Wilkes Stranch Winston-Salem, NC, Augustus Marshall Smith, Jr. Abbeville, SC, nieces Nancy Kathleen Smith Abbeville, SC, Susan Smith Bledsoe Mayo, SC, Patricia Smith Shealy Pomaria, SC, eleven great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers Eugene Wilkes Smith and Augustus Marshall Smith. Graveside services will be conducted Monday, March 8, 2004 at 11:00 AM from Long Cane Cemetery with the Rev. George Busch officiating. The family is at the home of Charlotte Smith, 108 Florence St., Abbeville, SC. THE CHANDLER-JACKSON FUNERAL HOME IS IN CHARGE OF ARRANGEMENTS.
