William I. King, ’42

William Ivan King, 92, Colonel (Retired), U.S. Army, and Senior Executive Service, Federal Civil Service, (Retired), died December 18, 2012 at Viera, FL. A memorial service will be at Faith Lutheran Church, Viera, FL. Interment of cremated remains will be at Arlington National Cemetery. Son of Lt (MC), US Navy (later, Capt, MC, US Navy Reserve), and Mrs. W. Ivan King, he was born at Pensacola Naval Air Station, FL. He graduated (1938) from Western High School in Washington, DC, and (1942) The Citadel in Charleston, SC, and 1962, received a Master’s degree from The George Washington University. Commissioned in the Army Seacoast Artillery upon graduation from The Citadel in 1942, he commanded a seacoast artillery unit in the South Atlantic, an antiaircraft artillery battery in the CONUS, and a field artillery battalion in Korea. He taught operation and maintenance of fire control directors at The Antiaircraft School at Ft. Bliss, TX, and in 1950, designed the first automated fire control computer for a Field Artillery battery. He was a Project Officer of the Ordnance Corps development of the T-29 Model, which was discontinued upon introduction of the battalion model (FADAC). Schools he attended were Advanced Artillery; Command and General Staff; Airborne; and the Army War College (1962). He was then assigned to the U.S. Army Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations. He was a member of the Plans and Policy Office in the Office of the Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army. He retired from the Army in 1966. From 1966 to 1969, he was a research analyst in the metals marketing firm, Herman B Director Associates, in Washington, DC. He returned to work for the Department of Defense as a Charter Member of The Senior Executive Service, in the Office of The Assistant Secretary of Defense for Manpower and Reserve Affairs. He was assigned to the U.S. Army as Deputy Director of Forces Directorate in the Office of Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations. He retired from the Senior Executive Service because of disability in 1981. He was married to Gene Kohler, a native of Washington DC, in 1947. From l963 to 1996, their permanent address was Bethesda, MD. They were members of Kenwood Golf and Country Club, and he was a member of Thad Dulin Post of the American Legion. While in Bethesda, they were active in St. Andrews, and later, Concord-St. Andrews Methodist Church. In 1996 the Kings moved to Indian River Colony Club, in Melbourne, FL, where Mrs. King now resides. In 2007 they joined Faith Lutheran Church, in Viera, FL. Survivors include their daughter, Rhea and husband, Howard Stickley of Palm Bay, FL; their son, William I. King, Jr. and his wife, Carol of Clover, SC; two grandchildren, Mrs. Lisa K. Buka and her husband, Richard, and Daniel M. Weaver and his wife Katy; and three great-grandchildren, Shane Buka, Magnolia Weaver, and Arabella Weaver. A memorial service will be held at Faith Viera Lutheran Church, 5550 Faith Drive, Rockledge, FL 32955, on Saturday, January 12, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements by Florida Memorial Funeral Home, Rockledge.
