William Harold Suggs Sr., of Charlottesville, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, at his home. Born Aug. 1, 1942, in Greensboro, N.C., he was the son of Dorothy B. Suggs and the late H. Harold Suggs. After graduating from the Win-throp Training School in Rock Hill, S.C., in 1959. He attended the Citadel, graduating in 1963, with a bachelor of arts degree in English. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army, and served on a variety of intelligence, airborne, and special forces assignments, including tours with the 82nd Airborne Division, 5th Special Forces Group, and 6th Special Forces Group. He completed tours of duty in South Vietnam in 1966 and 1969 to 1970. Mr. Suggs left active duty with the rank of Captain in 1973. He attended Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C., during 1973 and 1974, earning his Masters in History. He subsequently entered the doctoral program art the University of Virginia, where he studied Russian History. Mr. Suggs was a longtime analyst mat the National Ground Intelligence Center, formerly the U.S. Army Foreign Science and Technology Center, in Charlottesville. He was active in the church and was a vestry member at All Saints Anglican Church in Charlottesville. He was an officer of numerous social and civic organizations, including, the Sons of the American Revolution, the Red-Land Club, the Rotary, English-speaking union, and the Young Men’s Business Club. Mr. Suggs is survived by his mother, Mrs. H. Harold Suggs of Greensboro, N.C.; his son, Cdr. (S) William H. Suggs Jr., U.S. Navy, and his wife, Mrs. Kate Suggs; two grandchildren, Fiona Jane Suggs and Brendan Michael Suggs, of Leonardtown, Md.; and former wives, Ms. Lynn S. Davis of Rock Hill, S.C., and Ms. Nancy DeWitt of Charlottesville. A Requiem Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday morning at All Saints Anglican Church, Charlottesville.
