Major General William Holman Brandenburg Jr., USA, Ret., of Santee, died at his home in South Carolina on February 26, 2024 at the age of 72. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m., Thursday, March 7, at Jerusalem Cemetery.
General Brandenburg was from Elloree, SC; the son of Brigadier General William Holman Brandenburg Sr., United States Army, Retired, and Mary Heath Owen and step-son to Doris M. Brandenburg. He graduated from Richmond Academy in Augusta, Georgia and The Citadel in 1973 as well as receiving a Masters in Management from Troy State University.
General Brandenburg served in the United States Army from 1973 until he retired in 2008. During his career, General Brandenburg served all over the world including with the Allied Rapid Reaction Corp. in the Balkans. He was deployed to Iraq as Deputy Commanding General (detainee operations) and Task Force 134.
His awards and decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Legion of Merit (2 Oak Leaf Clusters), Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (4 Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Expert Infantryman Badge, the Parachutist Badge, and the Ranger Tab.
Wherever he lived, Bill always considered Elloree home. Despite being retired, he continued his life of service and leadership by mentoring young people and serving on the Elloree Town Council. One of his most passionate hobbies throughout his life was golf, a game at which he was quite skilled and brought him much joy.
He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Robert Owen Brandenburg.
Survivors include his wife, Sybil Livingston Brandenburg, of Elloree,SC and son, W. Andrew Brandenburg, of Charleston, SC.
