William G. Hamilton, Sr., of Charleston, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, October 31, 2016. His Funeral Service will be held Friday, November 4, 2016 in Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1157 Sam Rittenberg Blvd at 2:30 p.m. The family will receive friends in the Church Fellowship Hall from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service. Interment will follow in Live Oak Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC. WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway. He is survived by his two daughters, Pamela H. Smith (Timmy) of Hollywood, SC, Patricia Stennett (Gary) of Charleston, SC, son, Robert C. Hamilton of Charleston; 4 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his late wife’s, Dorothy, Margaret and Doris Hamilton, a son William G. Hamilton, Jr., and his brother, Wesley B. Hamilton. Bill was born in Syracuse, NY on May 11, 1923, son of the late Minnie Boyd and Wesley G. Hamilton. He moved to Charleston in 1933, attended Bennett and Charleston High for one year. He graduated from Carlisle Military School in Bamberg, SC in 1940 and received his Bachelor’s Degree from The Citadel, Class of 1944. Due to World War II, the class of 1944 was called to active duty in the Spring of 1943. Bill received his basic training at Camp Craft Infantry Training Center. At completion of training, he remained on the training staff cadre. Bill went on to Fort Benning, GA and received his commission as Second Lieutenant. Within a month, he arrived in northern France and assigned to the 36th Infantry Division. He saw action in France, Germany, and Austria. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, two battle stars, WWII Victory Medal, and German Occupation Medal. He received his honorable discharge in 1946 and joined Company A, 118th Infantry known as the Sumter Guards. Bill was always active in civic and church activities. He was active in the Charleston Exchange Club and was a life member in The Citadel Alumni Association, Brigadier Club and the VFW.
