On Tuesday, September 3, 2019, William Garbade Carter, of Okatie, passed away peacefully at his home. Garbade was born on March 1, 1933, to Hubert and Annie Carter in Tarboro, South Carolina; the place he would always call home no matter where he lived. After graduating from Ridgeland High School, Garbade attended The Citadel, where he earned a Bachelor of Science and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. Bill, as he was known in military circles, proudly served his country for 20 years before retiring in 1975 as a Major. He served in Germany, Vietnam, Iran and South Korea, as well as many stateside assignments. Among his many accomplishments and awards, he was a Master Weapons Controller.
A true southern gentleman, Garbade was also an avid outdoorsman. He loved to tell colorful stories about his adventures in Green Swamp and on the Chechessee River. He particularly enjoyed teaching young people about hunting and fishing.
In 2013, Garbade was one of the founding members of the Episcopal Church of Okatie. In fact, the first services were held on Garbade and Carol’s dock.
For 63 years Garbade was married to the love of his life, Carol Carter. Their love story played out all around the world. They have two children, Bill (Donna) and Ann (Clair) Masters; five grandchildren, Chris (Stephanie), Emily and Josh Carter and Emily and Avery Masters and four great grandchildren.
A celebration of his life will be held at Noon on Friday, September 13, 2019 at the Episcopal Church of Okatie with burial at 2:00 pm in Beaufort National Cemetery.
