William Folks Varn, 75, of Waycross passed away Wednesday (Feb. 23, 2005) afternoon. He was a member of a prominent south Georgia timber family. He was the son of the late Kennard Seforth and Penelope Evans Varn. He was preceded in death by a sister, Kennard Lisa Varn Seaman, and a brother, Kontz Stuart Varn. He was a graduate of The Citadel of South Carolina and the University of Georgia Law School. He served his country as a second lieutenant in the Korean War. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He is survived by two sons, William Folks Varn Jr. (wife Elizabeth), of St. Simons Island, and Robert Brinson Varn, of Jacksonville, Fla.; one daughter, Penelope Varn Kern (husband Steve), of Seattle, Wash.; two grandchildren, Catherine Elizabeth Varn and William F. Varn III, both of St. Simons Island, two sisters, Margaret Varn Shave, of Amelia Island, Fla., and Carolyn Varn Hereford, of Valdosta; one brother, Jacob Varn (wife Joyce), of Waycross; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Miles-Odum Funeral Home. The family will greet friends Tuesday at the funeral home beginning at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at the Varn family plot in Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 410 Williams St., Waycross, Ga. 31501, or to the Waycross Primitive Baptist Church, 107 Linden Drive, Waycross, Ga. 31501.
