William E. “Bill” Hughes, 73, resident of 204 Deer Run Lane, husband of Hazel Burnett Hughes, died April 9, 2011 at Self Regional Medical Center. A son of the late Frank A. and Grace Jones Hughes, he was a graduate of Greenwood High School and a ’61 graduate of The Citadel. He retired as Sr. Vice President of Greenwood Development Corp. He was an organizer of the Greenwood Touchdown Club and in 2009, was inducted into the Greenwood Athletic Hall of Fame. Mr. Hughes was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection and the Greenwood Country Club. Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are sons, Dr. Thomas S. and wife, Dr. Lisa Hughes, Rev. Dr. Allen C. and wife, Louise Hughes, and daughter-in-law, Holli Hughes, all of Mt. Pleasant; a step-son, Trent N. Spearman of Greenville; a brother, Frank A. and wife, Nancy Hughes of Richmond, VA; a sister, Ann Hughes Rogers and husband, Boyd of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren, William E. Hughes, III, Riley Grace Hughes, Sanders Hughes, Everett Hughes, Chaplin, James and Josh Hughes, Dargen Hughes and Keffer Cromer. He was preceded in death by a son, William E. Hughes, Jr. Services will be 3:00 pm Monday at the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection with private family entombment in Oakbrook Memorial Park prior to the service. The family is at the home in Lodge Grounds and will receive friends at the church immediately following the service.
