William Edward “Chip” Clary Jr. September 12, 1942 October 19, 2016 COLUMBIA – A Service of Witness to the Resurrection for William Edward “Chip” Clary Jr., 74, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 22, 2016, at Forest Lake Presbyterian Church, with a reception following in the church parlor. Dr. Ellen Skidmore will officiate the service. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7:00 p.m. Friday, October 21, 2016, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Mr. Clary died Wednesday, October 19, 2016. Born to Mary McGregor Clary and W. Edward Clary, Chip grew up in Columbia and attended Columbia public schools. He graduated from Dreher High School in 1960. He attended The Citadel and Wingate College and later earned his B.A. from the University of South Carolina. He was a decorated U.S. Marine, having served in the cold war Cuban crises and for seven years in the ready reserves. He married Lydia Downing Clary in 1964 and started his professional career at C.I.T. Financial Corporation, moved to Liberty Life Fire and Casualty Insurance and then to Columbia Outdoor Advertising as Corporate Sales Manager. From there he took the University of South Carolina’s position as Executive Director of the Athletic Department Gamecock Club. After resigning this position, he formed an alliance with the Knox and Fortson families of Columbia to serve as Sales and Marketing Director for Terminix Pest Control Service. He retired in 2010. Chip was very active in civic affairs serving on the diaconate and session of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church, president of Columbia Sertoma and president of Forest Lake Club. He also worked with youth as a Little League baseball coach. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lydia Downing Clary; daughter, Mandy Clary Pierce (Greg); daughter, Marli Clary Drum (Louie); grandchildren, Wyatt Pierce and Clary Pierce; two sisters, Kitty Clary Goding and Shelley Clary Ray; aunt, Nina McGregor Brown; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
