MULLINS / William B. “Billy” Cox, 82, a lifelong resident of Mullins, died Sunday, March 28, 2004 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Mr. Cox was born December 24, 1921, a son of the late Dennis L. Cox, Sr. and the late Alma Smith Cox. After graduation from the Citadel in 1942, Mr. Cox entered World War II, serving in the European Theatre. Upon his return, he became associated with his father in the Cox Funeral Home. He was later an owner of Howard B. Smith Agency until his retirement in 1999 and was associated on an informal basis until his death. Mr. Cox was active in various activities of the community, including the Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Civitan Club, Rotary Club, and Cotillion Club. He was a member and officer of the Pee Dee Citadel Club, the Citadel Brigadier Foundation, and the Citadel Alumni Association. He was active in Macedonia United Methodist Church, attending the Hut Class as long as his health allowed. Mr. Cox was married to the late Betty Jo Hardin Cox for 52 years. From this union, he is survived by one son, Dr. William B. ”Chip” Cox, Jr., his wife, Anne, and two grandchildren, William B. Cox III and Elizabeth R. Cox, all of Myrtle Beach. He was predeceased by two brothers, Dennis L. Cox, Jr. and Norman Montgomery Cox. The funeral will be 4 p.m. Monday at Macedonia United Methodist Church, the Rev. Bruce Sayre officiating.
