William “Bill” Bellinger Cheney III, of Florence, passed away on Tuesday, May 11, 2021. He was born in Danville, KY, the son of the late Minnie Sue Oldham and William Bellinger Cheney, Jr. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by a sister, Camilla Cheney. Bill served in the US Army during the Vietnam war. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart and numerous other decorations. He was an active member and officer of several Veterans’ Associations. He graduated from Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, TN, he was a Citadel graduate and later earned a Master’s Degree from USC in Columbia, SC. He worked at the Savannah River Site in Aiken, SC, the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Richland, Washington and was a Nuclear Safeguard Inspector for the United Nations, working for the International Atomic Energy Agency which is headquartered in Vienna, Austria. Bill had been a deacon in the Baptist church, a member of the Citadel Alumni Association, and a member of the local Amateur Radio Operators Club (HAM). Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Martha Carol Fraser Cheney; son, William Bellinger Cheney IV (Emily); two sisters, Anne Oldham Michael and Sandra Lee Cheney Hubbard; and one brother, Thomas Cheney. A graveside service, directed by Cain Calcutt Funeral Home, will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 in the Florence National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
