Wilbur Jennings Taylor Jr., 72, of Wilmington, N.C., passed away Saturday, May 2, 2009, at his residence. He was born in Wilmington, N.C., Oct. 21, 1936, son of Atlanta King Taylor of Wilmington and the late Wilbur Jennings Taylor Sr. Mr. Taylor was a 1955 graduate of New Hanover High School and graduated from the Citadel in 1960 with a BS Degree in Business. He enjoyed a 43-year career in mortgage banking, working with Wells-Fargo, Cameron – Brown, First Union, and Norwest. He was also owner of Taylor Fireworks in Kansas City for 30 years and P & W Homes in Brunswick County for three years. He was a member of First Baptist Church, the Pine Valley Country Club, Cape Fear Country Club, Cape Fear Men’s Club, Wilmington Home Builders Association, and the Board of Realtors. His hobbies included golf, boating, hunting and fishing. Surviving is his wife of 23 years, Penney Eaker Taylor; four children, Dr. Dawn Taylor Hunt and husband, Dr. William S. Hunt, Wilbur Jennings Taylor III, and Mary Ellen Taylor Compton all of Newport News, Va., and Brandy Dianne Gussin and husband, Alexander A. Gussin of Charlotte; two grandchildren, William Stuart Hunt Jr., and Braden Carlton Compton; four sisters, Nell T. Teachey of Wilmington, Joyce Elaine Easter and husband, Bill of Wilmington, Patricia T. Lindsey and husband, Frank of Wrightsville Beach, and Grace T. Swain of Wilmington; two brothers, Luther Hill Taylor of Wilmington and Winston Cordell Taylor and wife, Marcia of Spartanburg, S.C.; and many wonderful nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were siblings, Wilbur Delano Taylor, Laura Taylor Vezina and Lucy Taylor Woods. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of his life at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at First Baptist Church, 411 Market Street, Wilmington, N.C., Dr. Franklin Hawkins officiating. Private interment will follow in Oleander Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Calvin Doss, William Butler, Charles Mincey, Gilmer Joyce, Bobby Harrelson, and John Pierson. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, May 4, 2009, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel. Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church, Wilmington. Tags: 1960
