Wendy Burdette Dempsey, 62, of Saint Helena Island, was born on December 24, 1959 in Beaufort, SC to Davis Lee and Joyce Warren Dempsey. She passed away peacefully at her parents’ home on Saturday, March 19, 2022.
Wendy was a graduate of Beaufort Academy, Presbyterian College, and earned her M. ED degree at the Citadel. She taught Special Education in the Charleston County School District for 31 years, both high school and elementary ages, until her retirement in 2014.
After her retirement, she stayed and lived in the Mt. Pleasant area until an early onset of Dementia took her back to St. Helena Island to live with her parents. She was known for her kindness, thoughtfulness, and her strict learning ethic.
“Mimi”, as she was known by her sister, brothers, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins was especially loved by her family, and her many lifetime friends.
Survivors include: her parents: Joyce and Davis Dempsey of St. Helena Island; brothers: Davey (Kim) Dempsey of Beaufort, and Kirk (Elaine) Dempsey of St. Helena Island; sister: Joy Rice of St. Helena Island; nieces, nephews, and great-nephews: Mary Kathryn Nunes (Ren and John), Warren Dempsey (Bethany and Grayson), Sarah Mueller (Alex and Owen), Caroline Dempsey, Clark Rice (Jennifer), and Madison Dempsey; many other extended family and friends also survive.
She is preceded in death by her nephew: Blake Dempsey Rice.
A Memorial Service for Wendy will be held at the St. Helena Baptist Church on Thursday, March 24, 2022 at noon. A Visitation and Reception will follow the Memorial Service at the St. Helena Baptist Church Social Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Connie Maxwell Children’s Ministry, a ministry dear to Wendy’s heart.
