Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Walter Carol Wright Jr., 77, of Shallotte passed away Wednesday, July 4, 2018.
He was born in Waycross, Ga., on Oct. 2, 1940, a son of Walter Carol Wright Sr. and Effie Le McDaniel Wright. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Michael.
He received a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from The Citadel in Charleston, S.C., and Master of Business Administration from Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif. He was also a section chief at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kan.
Lt. Col. Wright proudly served his country for 21 years in the U.S. Army earning the Ranger Tab; Bronze Star with lst Oak Leaf Cluster for Meritorious Service; Bronze Star with “V” Device for heroism; and Air Medal for meritorious achievement while participating in serial flight. He served in Korea, Vietnam, Hawaii, Germany, Denmark and numerous stateside postings. After retiring from military service he worked for Marriott Corp. as a general manager in the business division, retiring in 1997.
Walter was a generous, warm and wonderful man. He was a true community servant with a genuine compassion for his country, family and many cherished friends.
He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Council Wright; sons, Jeremy Wright of Noble, Ill.; daughters, Tricia Wright of Waipahu, Hawaii, and Natasha Wright and Sharon Wright, both of Shallotte; brother, Richard Wright (Susie) of Florence, S.C.; grandchildren, Hunter Gunnell, Brian Wright and Isabella Wright; special niece, Jamie Carroll of Charleston; and many adored nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 15, at his residence.
