Walter Andrew Bogumil Sr., of Endicott, N.Y., my dad, was born on November 2. 1929 in Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania and died on Thursday, April 8, 2021 in Endwell, NY. He was the oldest of six children born to the late Walter and Anna Bogumil.
In 1947 Walt graduated from GAR Memorial High School in Wilkes-Barre where he played football and received a football scholarship to the Citadel in Charleston, S.C. At the Citadel he was a star football running back as well as a cadet major. Walt’s listed in the Who’s Who of American Colleges and Universities. He graduated from the Citadel in 1951 with a degree in Business Administration.
Entering the Military as a Lieutenant, Walt trained at the Luke Air Force Base in Arizona, he received his wings at Bryan Air Force Base in Texas. He served as a Jet fighter pilot in combat service in Korea, stationed at K2 Taegu Air Base in South Korea and in Northern Japan. During his time in the Military he was awarded 3 metals: Air Medal, Korean Services Medal, and the United Nations Services Medal.
Returning home Walt went to work for IBM. He started as a Quality Assurance Engineer and then worked as a Cost Management Engineer. His early years were spent in Kingston NY and Poughkeepsie NY then moving to Endicott NY where he retired after thirty-three years with the company. He was part of the Quarter Century Club at IBM and played on their golf league winning numerous trophies.
Athletics played a major role throughout Walt’s life. He spent his spare time with sports and family recreation. He loved to fly Cessna’s, he sailed his boat on many NY lakes, he loved to ski in the Catskills, he hit the gym daily, played baseball, swam, and played tennis at the IBM country club, but most of all, he loved to golf.
He is preceded in death by his parents and by his siblings: Robert W. Bogumil, Shirley A. Bogumil, Louise Tomko of the Wilkes-Barre area and Jean Smith of Florida.
Surviving him are his children, Bonnie Bogumil Sadrian and her husband Bijan Sadrian, New Paltz NY, and his son Walter A. Bogumil Jr, Endwell NY. He will be missed by his beloved partner of twenty years Gale Smith, Endwell NY. Also surviving him is his brother Leonard J. Bogumil and his wife Darlene of New Port Ritchey Fl. He is survived by his nieces and nephews: Walter Bogumil, Mountain Top Pa, Sandra Bogumil Connell, Drum Pa, Linda Bogumil Chaney, St. Petersburg Fl, Jeffery Bogumil, Fl., Cindy Bogumil, Lisa Bogumil and Richard Bogumil of Ga.
Walt’s Family would like to extend a special thank you to the nursing staff at the Good Shepherd Home in Binghamton, NY. Although his time in their care was brief, they helped him through his final days with compassion and dignity. Thank you also to Rice Funeral Home of Johnson City NY.
A private funeral service and interment will be held at the convenience of the family at St. Mary’s Cemetery Hanover Township, Pa.
