Walter Stevens “Steve” Beckham Sr., age 81, of Lancaster, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, June 5, 2022, peacefully, surrounded by his family.
He was born March 18, 1941, the son of the late R.A. Beckham and Katherine Stevens Beckham. Upon graduation from Lancaster High School, he attended The Citadel and obtained a degree in business administration. Mr. Beckham proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and was a Vietnam veteran.
Following his military service, he founded Beckham Enterprises, providing development and construction services, and became known as one of Lancaster’s finest custom homebuilders. As founder, owner and operator for 50-plus years, he enjoyed interacting with his longtime clients and greatly treasured those relationships. Over the years, the business transitioned into his office, where he enjoyed storage rentals, car restoration, building golf clubs, custom picture framing and a variety of projects.
During his life, he enjoyed motorcycles, scuba diving, golf, therapeutic sessions on the lawn mower and tractor, and Sunday family lunches at The Wagon Wheel. His love for family and his personal relationship with Jesus were most important to him. Mr. Beckham actively and faithfully attended Second Baptist Church.
Mr. Beckham is survived by his two sons, Walter Stevens “Steve” Beckham Jr. and Brian Beckham; his daughter, Marley Beckham Cole (Adam); five grandchildren, Hunter Stevens Beckham, Jackson Stevens Beckham, Avri Katherine Cole, Jacob Scott Cole and Jordan Beckham Cole; and his lifelong friend, caregiver and companion, Grace Clanton.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The celebration of life service for Mr. Beckham will be 11 a.m. Thursday, June 9, at the chapel of Burgess Funeral Home, officiated by Dr. Brian Saxon. Burial will follow at Westside City Cemetery.
