Thomas Lamar “Sonny” Long Jr., 81, passed away Monday, April 30, 2012, at his home on St. Simons Island. A memorial service and celebration of his life will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at The Chapel with the Rev. Jay Hanson offi ciating. Mr. Long was born March 20, 1931, in Columbia, S.C., to the late Thomas Lamar Long Sr. and the late Nell Lee Long. He graduated from The Citadel in 1953 with a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering and remained an active and enthusiastic alumnus. Upon graduating, he served two years as a U.S. Army aviator stationed in Bolivia and Peru, where he fl ew a single engine plane over the Andes Mountains and later published a book about the experience. After his service, Mr. Long moved to Savannah to work for Gulf Oil Corporation as a civil engineer. Mr. Long is survived by his lovely wife (as he would say to everyone he met), Mollie Hart Long, of St. Simons Island; son, Danny Lamar Long, of St. Simons Island; daughter, Cathy Long Pringle, of St. Simons Island; and son, David Lamar Long and wife, Amy Jayne Long, of Wilmington, N.C. He is also survived by four grandsons, four granddaughters and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Long will be remembered as a loving husband, father, Granddaddy, great grandfather, and good friend to all. You could often fi nd him bragging about one of his grandchildren, doing yard work at all hours of the day, and sneaking a bowl of peach ice cream late at night.
