Thomas F. Anderson Jr., husband of Lois Jolin Anderson, passed away Sunday April 22, 2018 at St. Francis Hospital in Charleston. He was 86.
Mr. Anderson was born in Greenwood, in his grandmother’s home, a son of the late Thomas F. Anderson Sr. and Anne Milling Anderson. He was raised in Abbeville, and took care of his mother and sister while his father was serving in WWII. He graduated from The Citadel in 1953 with a degree in Civil Engineering, and then served as an officer in the United States Army and the Army Corps of Engineers. He married his wife Lois, and then completed his military service in Bordeaux, France.
In his civilian life he spent twenty years in Baltimore creating a new water system for the city with Wright Construction, and became vice-president of the utility division. Later, after completing another job in Aiken, he purchased the utility division and created his own company, T.F. Anderson and Sons.
Tom loved the water, especially the Chesapeake Bay, and was very active in the Eastern Yacht Club. He was an “adopted” son of Italy, and the Italian contractors welcomed him as one of his own.
A strong community supporter, Tom belonged to many organizations including: The Citadel Alumni Association (life member), The National Eagle Scout Association, The AF and AM Warren Lafayette Masonic Lodge (50 year member), The American Legion, The National Rifle Association, The National Utility Contractors Association (past president), The Eastern Yacht Club (past Commodore), The Edisto Island Yacht Club (past Commodore), The Edisto Historical Preservation Society, The Edisto Island Open Land Trust, The Old Edgefield District Genealogical Society, the Lions Club International, Guardians of the Graves, He was a founding member and president of both The Bernard E. Bee Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the Edisto Camp of the SCV Company I. The sons of American Veterans, the Edisto Methodist Church, the Edisto Community Church (founding member), and a loving supporter of the Presbyterian Church on Edisto island.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by their sons, Thomas F. Anderson III (Trisha) of Edisto, and Robert Anderson of Aiken. He leaves behind two sisters, Pat Vaughn (Bob) and Kitty Munn (Mike), and two brothers-in-law, Bob and Jack Jolin. He has a special niece that he considered an “adopted daughter”, “Suzi” Stanley Fontenot. He has numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends that he thought of as family. He was preceded in death by a sister, Little Anne Anderson.
Tom never went anywhere that he did not meet a new friend, his life was good, and he considered himself lucky to see so many parts of the world. His parting words were…”I hope to meet all the ones mentioned…and not mentioned…one day SomeWhere Over the Rainbow”.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at 11:00 at The Presbyterian Church on Edisto Island, with Rev. Ashley R. Sanders officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the Reconfiguration for Mission Capital Campaign at The Presbyterian Church on Edisto Island, P.O.B. 86, Edisto Island, SC 29438.
Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, 117 Paul Street in Walterboro is in charge of arrangements.
