Thomas E. Benton Jr., 74, died Saturday, June 7, 2003, in a Florence hospital after a brief illness. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, in Sardis Baptist Church. Interment will be in the church cemetery directed by Layton-Anderson Funeral Home. He was born in Florence County the son of the late Thomas Evans and Viola Johnson Benton. He was a graduate of Sardis High School and of The Citadel. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during the Korean Conflict. He retired from Cameron & Barkley Electric Supply. He was instrumental in forming the Little League baseball team of Sardis. Mr. Benton was married to Jean Jollie Langston. He was a member of Sardis Baptist Church and was involved in many activities of the church. Surviving are his wife of the home; a son, James C. Jimmy Langston (Fran) of Timmonsville; a daughter, Jeanne Langston Morehouse (Lynn) of Florence; and a grandson, Midshipman Whit Ross Morehouse, U.S. Naval Academy. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home, 4210 W. Palmetto St., and at other times at the residence.
