Stuart Pugh Dowling, DVM, a native of Mobile, AL, passed away on Monday, July 23rd, after a brief illness, at age 85. Dr. Dowling practiced veterinary medicine in Mobile and Birmingham for over forty years and throughout his life was active in numerous civic and mystic organizations. A member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Mobile and St. Francis Episcopal Church on Dauphin Island, he attended the University of Alabama, The Citadel, Springhill College, and received his degree in Veterinary Medicine from Auburn University. Dr. Dowling served in the Merchant Marine during World War II and the US Army during the Korean War, obtaining the rank of Captain and receiving the Bronze Star Medal. He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Hebert B. Dowling, and mother, Kathleen P. Dowling. Dr. Dowling is survived by his wife, Ann Bender Dowling, son, David B. Dowling, and daughter, Sally D. Johnston. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Kathleen J. Burton, Carter U. Johnston Jr. and Samuel T. Johnston, two great-grandchildren, Griffin W. Burton and Hayden S. Burton, a sister, Margaret D. Hillard, and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at 9:00 on Friday, July 27th, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1900 Dauphin Street, Mobile, AL, with the service to follow at 10:00, and internment thereafter at Pinecrest Cemetery.
