Speir Newton Ramsey, MD, 81, of Savannah, Ga., passed away peacefully at his home on January 2, 2017. Born in Guyton, GA, he was the son of the late Jack E. and Mary Cubbedge Ramsey. He graduated from Carlisle Military School class of 1953 in Bamberg, SC. He attended The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina and graduated in 1957 where he was Captain of Charlie Company and the recipient of many honors including Chairman of Honor Committee; Member of President’s Advisory Committee; Member of Summerall Guards – Precision Military Drill Team; Member of the Round Table; Distinguished Military Student Award; Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award; Distinguished Cadet Officer at Tyndol Air Force Base Summer Camp – Florida; and Who’s Who in America’s Colleges and Universities. Upon graduating from The Citadel, he accepted his commission as Lieutenant and served in the United States Air Force as a jet pilot in the flight program and as Assistant Provost Marshall at Selfridge Air Force Base in Harrison Township, Michigan. He graduated from Medical College of Georgia in 1966 and then moved to Savannah to complete his residency at Memorial Medical Center. He served as Chief Resident his last year and became board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He was a beloved and long time member of the Savannah, GA medical community where he joyfully ushered many babies into the world. Additionally in his career, he served as Chairman of the Department of OB/GYN at Memorial Medical Center, Chief of OB/GYN Staff at Memorial Medical Center and Clinical Assistant Professor with Medical College of Georgia. Furthermore, he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel, Aide De Camp, Governor’s Staff by Governor Joe Frank Harris in 1983. In 2001, he retired after 30 fulfilling years of private practice specializing in Obstetrics, Gynecology and Infertility, but remained active as a volunteer physician working at the Community Health Mission and traveling to Guatemala with Faith in Practice Medical Missions. In his retirement, he also served as a member of the Medical Staff Advisory Committee at Candler/St. Joseph’s Hospital and was honored by the Georgia Medical Society with a Health Care Hereos Award in 2009. He held a lifetime membership with the Association of Citadel Men, was a proud member of The Gold Corps, and enjoyed staying in contact with his many Citadel and MCG friends and attending alumni reunions. He was proud of his Scottish ancestry, was an avid reader, enjoyed wood-working, loved to travel abroad, and especially loved spending time at his home away from home in Highlands, NC. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Patricia Summerell Ramsey; children Michael Ramsey (Cindy), David Ramsey (Rebecca) and Sheron Ramsey Smith; stepchildren Laurent Guillou III, Patrick Guillou, Gregg Guillou (Ulrike) and Ashley Guillou Lewis (Grant); grandchildren Danae Smith, Christian Smith, Ethan Ramsey, Madeline Ramsey, Adam Ramsey, Peyton Lewis, Lauren Lewis and David Kiley; brother Jack E. Ramsey Jr. (Susan); nephew Jack E. (Chip) Ramsey III; and life-long best friend Larry Reynolds. The family would like to thank all those who provided care for Speir during these last months, but especially Dr. L. E. Bud Roberston and his staff. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 7, 2017 at 10:00am at Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church with a reception and visitation of family and friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service.
