Sidney “Sid” Hughes, age 76, of Birmingham, Alabama passed away on Thursday, April 27, 2023.Sidney was born on September 24, 1946 in Athens, GA to parents, Ira and Florrie “Flo” Hughes. After graduating high school in 1964, he went on to graduate from The Citadel with a degree in History. Sidney joined the United States Army, he served a tour in both Korea and Vietnam. He was awarded two Purple Hearts during his military career and retired at the rank of Colonel.Sidney also graduated from Samford University Cumberland School of Law where he earned his Juris Doctor in 1974. He opened his own firm where he practiced family law until his retirement in February of 2023.Sidney was a long-time member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he was actively involved and served as a Sunday School teacher. He also served as a Gideon with The Gideons International for many years.Sidney was predeceased by his wife, Diane Hughes, his parents and brother Robert Hughes. He is survived by his sons Jonathan Hughes (Donna) and Joshua Hughes (Jamie); daughter Kate Hughes; grandchildren Ryleigh Hughes, Kahnor Hughes, Ella Hughes, Sadie Hughes and Hudson Hughes; sister Karen McCarty (Lee), brother Jerry Hughes (Ellen) and sister Sherryl Hughes; and a host of nieces and nephews.The family will receive friends and relatives on Wednesday, May 3, 2023 at 9:00 a.m. with a service to follow at 10:00 a.m. at Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood, AL.
