Shirley Thompson Brannock, 83, of Summerville, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest October 25, 2023. She was born January 29, 1940 in Raleigh, North Carolina, daughter of the late James Lee Thompson, Sr. and Elsie Benson Thompson. Shirley graduated in 1961 from Greensboro College and earned a Master of Education degree from the Citadel. Her 43-year teaching career was mainly in elementary grades at Addlestone Hebrew Academy (Charleston Hebrew Institute) and First Baptist Church School. Later she held positions in the Charleston County School District and Dorchester II School District Office until she retired in 2004.
Shirley loved music. She enjoyed singing in the choir and playing handbells at John Wesley United Methodist Church. She also sang in the choir at the Village at Summerville (Presbyteruan Home), where she lived her last seven years. The family thanks all the staff at The Village for her care.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, William Eugene Brannock; three sons, William Brian Brannock (Robin) of Collinsville, VA, David Eugene Brannock (Mary Ethel) of Greeneville, TN, Stephen Lee Brannock (Susan) of Summerville, SC; five grandchildren, Andrew, Lainey, Molly, Kate (Daniel), Paul, Zachary.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother James “Jimmy” Thompson (Susan) of Reidsville, NC.
Shirley’s cryptside service will be held Saturday, November 4, 2023, at 11 a.m., at the mausoleum at Live Oak Memorial Gardens, 3093 Ashley River Rd, Charleston, SC 29414. The family will receive friends immediately after the service. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. West Ashley Chapel.
