Shawn Stephen Hans, of Society Hill, passed away January 17, 2021 at McLeod Hospice in Florence, South Carolina of Covid complications. He was the son of the late Eugene P. Hans, Jr., of Buffalo, NY, and Hazel Adams Hans, of Belfast, Northern Ireland. Shawn was born at Wheelus Air Base in Tripoli, Libya in 1950. He traveled the world with his parents and younger brother, Martin, living wherever his father was stationed as ordered by the USAF. Shawn settled in Charleston, SC after his father’s last move back to Charleston. He graduated from Garrett High School in 1968 and from the Citadel in 1972, when he then followed his father into the USAF. After Shawn’s career in the USAF, he returned to Charleston and went to work in banking. After his retirement, Shawn stayed in the Charleston area and cared for his parents until they passed. Shawn then moved to Society Hill where he helped his brother and was active in the Friends of the Society Hill Library. Shawn also volunteered for the town by keeping it clean of litter and helping with whatever activities the town needed. Shawn is survived by his brother, Martin P. Hans, of Timmonsville, SC, and a number of cousins, including his favorite Yankee cousin, Philip Hans, and Philip’s incredible wife, Patricia Hans, of Woodbridge, VA. Services will be private at a later date due to the pandemic. A celebration of Shawn’s life will be held at his brother’s farm in Timmonsville at a later time when conditions are safe. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Darlington County Humane Society, 1705 Adoption Way, Darlington, SC, 29532.
